Chapter 13 - THE TEN MILLION DOLLARS

The money became an argument between them.

Dante had promised ten million dollars to anyone who translated the parchment.

Selene had done exactly that.

Now the disputed reserves were being recovered through court-supervised proceedings, and Dante wanted to honor his public offer using lawful personal funds.

Selene refused.

"I don't want ten million dollars."

Dante stared.

"You earned it."

"I helped uncover a conspiracy. That doesn't mean I want to become financially dependent on you."

"That's not what I'm offering."

"I know."

He frowned.

"Then what do you want?"

Selene considered.

"A foundation."

Dante leaned back.

"What kind?"

"One that funds independent linguistic research, protects endangered manuscript collections, and supports scholars facing retaliation for reporting fraud."

Dante smiled.

"You've been planning this."

"For weeks."

"And you want the ten million to fund it?"

"Only if the transfer is lawful, independently administered, and doesn't buy you control over the research."

Dante laughed.

"You negotiate like a prosecutor."

"I negotiate like a woman who once lost everything because powerful men thought she could be bought."

His smile faded.

Then he nodded.

"Agreed."

The foundation was established months later with independent trustees and transparent governance.

Its first grants supported archival preservation, translation fellowships, and legal assistance for researchers facing documented institutional retaliation.

Selene became its founding academic director.

She refused to name it after herself.

Instead, she chose a phrase from the manuscript.

The Keeper Is Not the Owner.

At the opening ceremony, Dante stood in the back of the room.

He listened as Selene spoke about the responsibility of preserving knowledge.

When she finished, the audience applauded.

Dante remained still.

Luca nudged him.

"Boss."

Dante looked over.

"What?"

Luca smiled.

"You look proud."

Dante watched Selene step down from the podium.

"I am."

Then Luca added, "Your father would be too."

May you like

Dante swallowed.

For the first time, the thought didn't hurt quite as much.
