Chapter 7 - LUCA OFFERED ME TEN MILLION DOLLARS

Luca Vitali did not threaten me.

That would have been simpler.

He offered money.

We met through attorneys in a conference room.

He was sixty-two.

Elegant.

Silver-haired.

Warm smile.

The kind of man strangers trusted instantly.

“I’m sorry for what happened to Daniel.”

I stared.

“That sounds carefully worded.”

“It is.”

Then his attorney placed a proposal on the table.

Ten million dollars.

Confidential settlement.

No admission.

Transfer of all original records.

Mutual release.

My hands went cold.

“What exactly am I releasing?”

“Potential civil claims concerning reputational and economic harm.”

“You haven’t even finished reviewing the evidence.”

Luca smiled.

“Then ten million is generous.”

No.

Ten million was fear with commas.

I pushed it back.

“I’m not selling the records.”

His eyes changed.

Tiny.

There.

The warm uncle vanished for half a second.

Then:

“You’re pregnant.”

My entire body froze.

My attorney leaned forward.

“How does Mr. Vitali know that?”

Luca shrugged.

“Families talk.”

Alessandro did not.

I knew that instantly.

Only Liam, my attorney, doctor, Alessandro and perhaps Vittorio knew.

Someone was watching medical information?

No.

Too speculative.

Then Luca clarified:

“My brother told me.”

Vittorio.

Of course.

Another boundary failure.

Luca continued:

“You are carrying a Vitali child.”

I hated the phrase.

“My child.”

“And Alessandro’s.”

“Yes.”

“This scandal could damage the company your child may someday inherit.”

I looked at him.

“So your proposal is that I protect my unborn child by helping you bury what happened to my father?”

Luca smiled.

“I’m saying family changes priorities.”

There it was.

The philosophy that destroyed Daniel Monroe.

Protect the family.

Sacrifice the outsider.

I stood.

“No.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“You should think carefully.”

“I have.”

Then my attorney ended the meeting.

The independent investigation finished six weeks later.

Its findings were devastating.

Dad had identified irregular payments correctly.

His credentials had been used after hours from devices not assigned to him.

Several approval trails had been altered.

Bellatrix Consulting received substantial funds that ultimately benefited entities connected to Luca.

The evidence supported referral for fraud and related financial investigations.

It did not prove every dollar in the original scandal went to Luca personally.

Important.

Accuracy.

The board removed Luca from all executive authority pending legal proceedings.

Authorities handled the rest.

No Alessandro ordering revenge.

No private punishment.

May you like

Just evidence finally leaving the family.
