Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

I came home two days early to surprise my wife.
Instead, I heard my seventy-four-year-old mother call her “Madam.”
It was three-thirty on a Wednesday afternoon when I opened the front door, suitcase still in my hand. Vanessa thought I was in Cincinnati until Friday for a regional sales conference. My flight had changed at the last minute, and I’d decided not to tell anyone.
Then I heard Vanessa’s voice from the kitchen.
“Not like that. Bring the tray properly. And wipe the table again when you’re done.”
Porcelain rattled softly.
My mother answered, “I already cleaned it twice.”
Vanessa’s tone turned cold.
“What do you say when I ask you to do something?”
Silence.
“Evelyn?”
Then came the words that made my stomach twist.
“Yes, Madam.”
I moved quietly toward the kitchen.
Mom had been living with us for eight months after hip surgery. Vanessa always told me she loved having her there.
“She keeps me company,” she would say.
But the woman I saw now didn’t look like someone being kept company.
Mom stood trembling with a silver tea tray in both hands. She wore an old gray cardigan I hadn’t seen in years, with a dish towel tucked into her waistband.
Vanessa sat at the breakfast table scrolling through her phone.
“Set it down,” she ordered.
Mom obeyed.
That was when I stepped into the room.
Vanessa’s face went white.
“Daniel!”
Then, almost instantly, she smiled and rushed toward me.
“You’re home early! Evelyn, sweetheart, you didn’t have to bring me tea. I told you I could get it myself.”
She kissed my cheek.
I barely noticed.
My eyes stayed on Mom.
“Why did you call Vanessa ‘Madam’?”
Mom stared at the floor.
“Mom,” I said again.
May you like
Slowly, she lifted her eyes to mine.
And the fear I saw there told me the tea tray was only the beginning.
