Chapter 8 - I ALMOST LOST MY JOB FOR A REASON THAT WASN’T REAL

Three months after Mom entered treatment, I returned to work.
I expected disaster.
The project had launched.
Without me.
That hurt my ego more than I expected.
Claire called me into her office.
“I owe you an apology.”
“For?”
“We built the project around you too much.”
I stared.
“That is not what I expected.”
“You were answering messages at midnight.”
“Fixing everyone’s mistakes.”
“Never using leave.”
“We rewarded it.”
She leaned back.
“Then when you disappeared, we realized three processes depended entirely on information inside your head.”
That was not dedication.
That was organizational failure.
We changed it.
Documentation.
Backup owners.
Cross-training.
Actual boundaries.
Then Claire said:
“There’s one other thing.”
My promotion.
I braced.
It had been delayed.
Fair.
I had missed a critical launch.
Then she continued:
“We’re reviewing you for the next cycle.”
No punishment.
No dramatic billionaire boss giving me a raise out of pity.
Just career moving more slowly than I planned.
Life.
I went home and told Mom.
Her face fell.
“This is because of me.”
“No.”
“Megan—”
“No.”
I smiled.
“I chose to be there.”
“You didn't make me.”
“You tried very hard to stop me, actually.”
She laughed.
Then I said:
“I spent years acting like being indispensable at work made me secure.”
“It just made me tired.”
Mom looked at me.
“You sound like me.”
That was alarming.
May you like
We both laughed.
