Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO LISTENED

Adrian Vale arrived at lunch five minutes early.
He wore a navy suit.
No flashy watch.
No entourage.
No unnecessary display of wealth.
He stood when I approached.
“Maren.”
“Adrian.”
He smiled.
“Thank you for coming.”
We sat beside a window overlooking the river.
For the first hour, we discussed business.
Affordable housing.
Infrastructure financing.
Public-private partnerships.
And the possibility of developing neglected waterfront neighborhoods without displacing existing residents.
Adrian listened.
Really listened.
When I disagreed, he asked why.
When I challenged his numbers, he smiled.
When I pointed out a flaw in his proposal, he thanked me.
By dessert, I realized something strange.
I was enjoying myself.
Not because he was handsome.
Though he was.
Not because he was wealthy.
Though he was.
But because he treated my intelligence as something valuable.
Not threatening.
As we stood to leave, Adrian looked at me.
“Can I ask you something personal?”
I hesitated.
“Depends.”
He smiled.
“Are you happy?”
The question surprised me.
I looked toward the river.
For years, I had answered that question automatically.
Of course.
Everything's wonderful.
Ethan and I are doing great.
Now I considered it.
Then smiled.
“I'm getting there.”
Adrian nodded.
“Good.”
He did not ask about Ethan.
Did not offer advice.
Did not try to rescue me.
May you like
He simply opened the door.
And walked beside me into the afternoon sunlight.
