Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE THAT BECAME A HOME

Two years passed.

Daniel graduated from high school and earned a scholarship to study mechanical engineering.

I completed my hospitality management program and became assistant director of a boutique hotel in Chicago.

Nicholas continued rebuilding his life.

His legal proceedings were difficult.

He accepted responsibility for past wrongdoing and complied with the penalties and obligations imposed through the legal process.

He no longer controlled the criminal organization that had once made his name feared.

Some people never forgave him.

He understood why.

But he continued working toward a different future.

We moved into a smaller house outside the city.

It had a garden.

A fireplace.

A kitchen with yellow curtains.

And no locked staff corridors.

One evening, I found Nicholas standing in the backyard.

He was staring at a small tree we'd planted that spring.

“What are you doing?”

He smiled.

“Thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

He laughed.

Then turned serious.

“Do you ever regret it?”

“What?”

“Choosing me.”

I looked at him.

“Sometimes you leave your socks on the floor.”

He smiled.

“That's fair.”

“And you still think you can solve every problem with one phone call.”

“I'm improving.”

“Slowly.”

He laughed.

Then I stepped closer.

“No,” I said.

“I don't regret choosing you.”

His expression softened.

“But I didn't choose the man you used to be.”

I touched his face.

“I chose the man who decided to become someone better.”

He closed his eyes.

Then kissed my forehead.

Behind us, the house glowed with warm light.

Daniel was inside arguing with the television.

Dinner was cooking.

The dog was barking at a squirrel.

And for the first time in my life, happiness felt ordinary.

Not fragile.

Not borrowed.

May you like

Not something someone could take away with a single cruel decision.

It was ours.
