Chapter 10 - THE SIGNATURE THEY FEARED

Ava sat beside her mother in the Connecticut house.

The trust documents rested on the table.

Forty-eight million dollars.

A fortune.

Enough to change everything.

But Ava barely looked at the amount.

She looked at Eleanor.

“Mom, did you create this?”

Eleanor studied the papers.

Her right hand trembled.

Then she nodded.

“Yours.”

Ava's eyes filled.

“Why?”

Eleanor struggled.

“For…you.”

Ava pressed her hand.

“You didn't have to.”

Her mother looked at her with fierce determination.

“Mine…first.”

Ava understood.

The money wasn't a gift.

It was payment for work Eleanor had created.

Work Victoria had stolen.

Eleanor wanted her daughter to inherit what had been taken.

***

The attorneys explained that the trust could be activated if Eleanor demonstrated capacity and signed the required documents.

But there was a problem.

Victoria had obtained a guardianship order years earlier.

It gave her legal control over Eleanor's financial affairs.

Ava stared.

“Victoria is Mom's guardian?”

“Yes.”

“After she hurt her?”

The attorney nodded grimly.

The guardianship had been obtained through false medical representations.

Challenging it would require evidence.

Medical evaluations.

Court proceedings.

Time.

Ava looked at her mother.

Eleanor watched quietly.

Then she lifted her right hand.

“Court.”

Ava leaned closer.

“What?”

“Take…me.”

The room went silent.

Eleanor looked directly at the attorney.

“Court.”

Ava smiled through tears.

Her mother had been silenced for eighteen years.

She was finished being spoken for.

***

Victoria Whitmore did not surrender quietly.

Her attorneys argued that Eleanor lacked capacity.

They claimed Ava was being manipulated by Niko Moretti.

They questioned the authenticity of the Rose Ledger.

They described Eleanor as confused.

Unreliable.

Vulnerable.

Ava sat through every insult.

Then Eleanor entered the courtroom.

In a wheelchair.

Wearing a blue dress Ava had made herself.

The judge addressed her gently.

“Mrs. Monroe, do you understand why you're here?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Tell…truth.”

The judge waited.

Eleanor lifted her right hand.

“Victoria…hurt…me.”

Ava stopped breathing.

The courtroom became silent.

Eleanor continued slowly.

“Richard…hid…me.”

Victoria's attorney stood.

“Your Honor, this testimony—”

“Sit down,” the judge said.

Eleanor looked toward Victoria.

Her voice trembled.

“Stole…my work.”

Victoria stared.

For the first time in eighteen years, Eleanor Monroe was speaking publicly.

And no one could make her disappear.

***

The court appointed an independent guardian pending full review and suspended Victoria's authority.

The trust was temporarily protected.

The medical records were referred for investigation.

Ava walked out of the courthouse beside her mother.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted questions.

Niko waited near the car.

He didn't speak.

He simply opened the door.

Eleanor looked at him.

“Lorenzo?”

Niko froze.

“No, Mrs. Monroe.”

She studied his face.

“His…son.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor touched his hand.

“Good…heart?”

Niko looked startled.

Ava smiled.

“She's asking whether you have a good heart.”

He looked at Eleanor.

“I'm trying.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Good.”

***

That evening, Ava returned to the workshop.

For the first time, she began designing something new.

Not for Bianca.

Not for the Whitmore Foundation.

Not to prove she deserved a place in someone else's world.

For herself.

She drew a black rose.

Then crossed it out.

Not because she rejected her mother's symbol.

Because she wanted to create something that belonged to her own future.

She drew a silver thread looping into a rising sun.

A new mark.

A new beginning.

Niko watched from the doorway.

“What is it?”

“My label.”

He smiled.

“Does it have a name?”

Ava looked at the sketch.

“Monroe.”

“Just Monroe?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“It's enough.”

***

The following morning, Bianca called.

Ava almost ignored it.

Then answered.

“What?”

Bianca was crying.

“Mom knows about the trust.”

“I assumed she would.”

“No, Ava. You don't understand.”

“What?”

“She says if she can't control the money, she'll destroy everything.”

Ava stood.

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Bianca.”

“She left the house last night.”

Ava felt cold.

“Did she say where she was going?”

Bianca hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She took the original Bellwether contracts.”

Ava's heart raced.

“Why?”

Bianca began sobbing.

May you like

“Because she's going to meet Salvatore Moretti.”
