Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO RETURNED WITH A CAMERA

Vanessa Kensington did not surrender gracefully.

For nearly three months, she avoided public appearances while her attorneys challenged the allegations against her.

Then, on a Monday morning, she appeared on a popular television interview program.

She wore a pale pink dress.

Her hair was arranged in soft waves.

Her expression suggested a woman who had suffered terribly and wanted nothing more than to tell her story.

The host introduced her as a philanthropist and former fiancée of a wealthy businessman.

Vanessa began to cry before the first question ended.

“I loved Lorenzo,” she whispered. “I gave up everything to care for him.”

The interviewer leaned forward sympathetically.

“And now you're being accused of abusing him.”

Vanessa pressed a tissue against her eyes.

“It's heartbreaking. I believe vulnerable people are being manipulated around him.”

Then she named Abigail.

Not directly at first.

She referred to “a nurse who crossed professional boundaries.”

She suggested that Abigail had exploited Lorenzo's loneliness.

She implied that the relationship between them had begun while Abigail was still responsible for his care.

The accusations were carefully worded.

They were also damaging.

By noon, Abigail's workplace had received dozens of phone calls.

By evening, photographs from the adaptive rowing fundraiser were circulating online.

Some comments were supportive.

Others were vicious.

Abigail sat in her apartment staring at her phone.

She wanted to throw it across the room.

Instead, she called her professional advisor and her attorney.

She documented the allegations and prepared to respond through appropriate channels.

Then she turned off social media.

Lorenzo saw the interview from his office.

He watched Vanessa cry.

He watched the host nod sympathetically.

Then he heard Abigail described as an opportunist.

His anger was immediate.

Rafael stood nearby.

“Boss?”

Lorenzo closed the laptop.

“Contact Miriam.”

“Already done.”

Lorenzo looked up.

Rafael gave a small smile.

“I've learned.”

Abigail's attorney issued a carefully worded statement correcting the timeline of her employment and denying the allegations of misconduct.

Lorenzo separately confirmed that Abigail's clinical role had ended months before their personal relationship began.

The statements were accompanied by available documentation.

They did not discuss confidential medical details.

They did not retaliate with personal accusations.

And they did not attempt to win a public shouting match.

That frustrated Vanessa.

Her television appearance had been designed to provoke an emotional response.

Instead, she'd received lawyers, records, and silence.

Three days later, Abigail met Lorenzo at a botanical garden.

They'd planned the outing weeks earlier.

She considered canceling.

Then decided she would not give Vanessa control over her calendar.

Lorenzo was waiting near a fountain.

He held two paper cups of coffee.

“Decaf,” he said.

Abigail smiled.

“You remembered.”

“You threatened to stop seeing me if I kept giving you caffeine after six.”

“I did no such thing.”

“You implied it.”

She accepted the cup.

They moved slowly along a paved garden path lined with tulips.

The afternoon air was warm.

Children chased one another beside a greenhouse.

A couple posed for engagement photographs beneath a flowering tree.

For a while, they talked about ordinary things.

Then Abigail stopped.

“Lorenzo, I need to ask you something.”

He turned.

“Anything.”

“Do you feel responsible for what's happening to me?”

His expression changed.

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“I don't want that to become the foundation of whatever this is.”

He studied her.

“What do you want it to be?”

She considered.

“Honesty. Friendship. Attraction. Shared choices.”

He nodded.

“And boundaries?”

“Definitely boundaries.”

Lorenzo looked toward the fountain.

“I used to think loving someone meant being willing to do anything for them.”

Abigail smiled sadly.

“That can become dangerous.”

“I know.”

He looked back at her.

“I don't want to control your life. I don't want to pay your bills so you'll feel obligated to me. And I don't want you to spend the next twenty years taking care of me because you think that's what love requires.”

Abigail felt tears gather.

“Then what do you want?”

He smiled gently.

“I want you to tell me when you're angry. I want to know what you're reading. I want to hear about your classes even when I don't understand half the terminology.”

She laughed.

“Most people don't.”

“I want to take you to terrible movies and argue about dinner.”

His expression softened.

“And I want you to have a life that's fully yours, whether I'm in it or not.”

Abigail stepped closer.

“That sounds pretty good.”

He looked at her.

“Does it?”

“Yes.”

She leaned down.

Their kiss was gentle.

Unhurried.

Entirely mutual.

For a moment, all the public accusations and ugly headlines seemed very far away.

Then Lorenzo whispered, “I love you.”

Abigail closed her eyes.

She had known it was coming.

Some part of her had been afraid.

Not because she didn't feel the same way.

Because love had always seemed to arrive in her life with obligations attached.

But this was different.

She opened her eyes.

“I love you, too.”

His face changed.

The guardedness disappeared.

He smiled like a man who'd been given something he had never expected to hold again.

That night, Vanessa watched a photograph of them kissing appear on a gossip website.

She stared at the screen.

Then picked up her phone.

Edward Shaw answered after several rings.

“What?”

“They're together.”

“I don't care.”

“You should.”

“Vanessa, it's over.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Not for me.”

Edward sounded exhausted.

“Stop calling.”

She leaned forward.

“Do you remember the accident?”

Silence.

Then he said, “Don't.”

Vanessa smiled coldly.

“Do you remember what you told the mechanic?”

Edward's voice dropped.

“Be very careful.”

“Why?”

“Because if you start talking about that night, you'll destroy yourself, too.”

Vanessa ended the call.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

Because the accident had not been part of the original plan to take Lorenzo's power.

It had been something far worse.

And Edward Shaw knew exactly what had happened.
