Chapter 11 - THE NEPHEW NIKO NEVER KNEW

Luca Ferraro was twenty-two.
He studied architecture in Milan.
He played piano badly, according to his university profile, and volunteered at a community restoration project on weekends.
He had dark hair, brown eyes, and a smile that made Niko go silent.
"He looks like Elena," Ava whispered.
Niko nodded.
"Yes."
They were in Milan within forty-eight hours.
This time, Ava insisted on coming.
Niko had argued.
Not because he thought she was incapable.
Because he was frightened.
She recognized the difference.
Still, she refused to be left behind.
"You don't get to decide which dangers belong to me," she told him.
He looked at her.
Then nodded.
"You're right."
It was becoming easier for him.
Not easy.
But easier.
***
Luca met them at a café near the university.
He arrived carrying a rolled architectural drawing and a backpack with a broken zipper.
Ava liked him immediately.
He looked nothing like someone raised inside a mafia family.
He looked like a tired college student.
Which, she supposed, was exactly what he was.
Niko stood when Luca approached.
The young man looked at him.
Then stopped.
"You're Niko Moretti."
Niko nodded.
"Yes."
Luca's expression changed.
"My mother said you might come."
Silence.
Ava looked at Niko.
He had gone completely still.
"She told you about me?"
Luca nodded.
"Last week."
"Why last week?"
"Because someone contacted her."
"Who?"
Luca hesitated.
"A man named Richard Whitmore."
Ava felt cold.
"What did he want?"
"He said my mother had documents belonging to his family."
Niko's jaw tightened.
"Did she give him anything?"
"No."
"Where is she?"
Luca looked between them.
Then said:
"She doesn't want to see you."
The words struck Niko visibly.
Ava watched his face.
He recovered quickly.
Too quickly.
"Did she say why?"
Luca looked uncomfortable.
"She said you became the kind of man she ran from."
Silence.
Ava felt the words settle.
Niko looked down.
For the first time, she saw the full weight of his reputation.
Not the power.
The cost.
His sister had spent nineteen years believing the boy she'd protected had become another version of Alessandro Moretti.
And perhaps she wasn't entirely wrong.
***
They spoke for two hours.
Luca had grown up believing his father died before he was born.
He knew his mother had changed her name.
He knew she'd left Chicago because of dangerous people.
But he didn't know about the Black Rose Atelier.
Or the cabinet.
Or the money laundering.
Or the women whose lives had been damaged.
When Niko explained, Luca listened without interruption.
Then asked:
"Are you still involved?"
Niko looked at him.
"In some parts of the old organization, yes."
Luca nodded slowly.
"Then my mother was right to be afraid."
Ava glanced at Niko.
He didn't defend himself.
"No," he said quietly. "She wasn't wrong."
Luca looked surprised.
Niko continued.
"I inherited an organization built by men who believed fear was a form of loyalty."
He paused.
"I told myself I could control it."
"Could you?"
Niko looked at Ava.
Then back at Luca.
"Not without becoming part of it."
Silence.
Luca studied him.
"Then why are you here?"
Niko's voice changed.
"Because you're my sister's son."
He swallowed.
"And because I should have known you existed."
Luca looked down.
For a moment, he seemed younger than twenty-two.
Then he said:
"I don't know what to do with that."
Niko nodded.
"Neither do I."
Ava almost smiled.
Honesty.
At last.
***
That evening, Luca took them to the church where Elena worked.
The restoration workshop occupied a quiet building behind the sanctuary.
Sunlight fell through tall windows.
Long tables held damaged tapestries and old ceremonial garments.
The air smelled of linen, beeswax, and dust.
Ava stopped at the doorway.
For one moment, she felt as though she'd stepped into her mother's workroom.
Then a woman turned.
Elena Russo.
Older.
Thin.
Silver in her hair.
But unmistakable.
Niko stopped breathing.
Elena looked at him.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then she whispered:
"Nicolo."
His face changed.
Ava stepped back.
This moment didn't belong to her.
Niko took one step forward.
"Elena."
She began crying.
He did too.
Then they crossed the room.
And embraced.
Nineteen years vanished.
Not really.
Nothing could return those years.
But for one moment, they were simply brother and sister.
Holding on.
***
Later, Elena explained.
She had stayed hidden because the network had not disappeared after Alessandro's death.
Other men had inherited it.
Some operated under new names.
Some used legitimate companies.
Some remained connected to the Moretti organization.
Elena feared that returning would expose Luca.
She also feared Niko.
Not because she believed he would hurt her deliberately.
Because she knew how power could make people dangerous without their intending to be.
Niko listened.
Then asked:
"Who is still running it?"
Elena looked at Ava.
Then at Luca.
Finally, she answered.
"Victoria Whitmore."
Ava went cold.
Her stepmother.
The woman who had sat calmly while Bianca tore her dress.
The woman who had tried to sell the cabinet.
The woman who had spent sixteen years controlling Eleanor's legacy.
Elena continued.
"Victoria didn't inherit the network."
May you like
She leaned forward.
"She built the modern version."
