Chapter 14 - A Love Without a Price Tag

Gabriel and I dated for nearly a year before we discussed living together.

We took our time.

I needed it.

For years, I'd confused survival with pleasing people who held power over me.

I didn't want to repeat that pattern with another wealthy person.

Gabriel understood.

He never asked me to leave the café.

Never suggested that my work was beneath me.

Never treated my independence as an insult.

---

His own life was changing too.

He continued addressing his past involvement in criminal activity through legal processes and restructuring his legitimate businesses.

The transition was difficult.

Some associates left.

Certain operations closed.

He faced scrutiny.

And he accepted that not everyone would believe he'd changed.

I respected the work.

But I didn't pretend it erased the past.

When we discussed a future together, I made my boundaries clear.

"I won't live in fear."

Gabriel nodded.

"I know."

"And I won't accept secrets about things that could endanger us."

He took a breath.

"That's fair."

I looked at him.

"Can you live like that?"

He considered carefully.

"I'm learning. And I intend to keep learning."

That mattered.

Not because it was a perfect promise.

Because he acknowledged that change was ongoing.

---

One evening, we walked along the Brooklyn waterfront.

The air smelled of salt and rain.

Gabriel held my hand.

Then stopped.

"Quinn."

I looked up.

"What?"

He smiled nervously.

"Would you ever consider marrying me?"

My heart stumbled.

I stared.

"Is that a proposal?"

"Not yet."

I laughed.

"Good, because this is a strange place to start negotiating."

He grinned.

"I thought we could discuss it before I purchased a ring."

I looked toward the water.

For a moment, I remembered Maureen.

The café.

The way she'd controlled my home and wages.

The fear of owing someone powerful anything.

Then I looked at Gabriel.

A man who asked.

Waited.

Listened.

And accepted no without turning it into punishment.

"I'd consider it," I said.

His smile widened.

"Really?"

I nodded.

"But I'm keeping my own business."

"Of course."

"And my own bank account."

"Absolutely."

"And you're not buying me a café."

He laughed.

"I learned that lesson."

I smiled.

"Good."

---

Several months later, Gabriel proposed properly.

Not in a grand ballroom.

Not before a crowd of powerful men.

Inside Quinn's Café.

After closing.

He stood beside the third stool with a small ring box.

I stared at him.

"Gabriel."

He smiled.

"Quinn Hayes, I have spent much of my life believing money and power could solve everything."

His voice softened.

"Then I met a woman who knew exactly how I liked my coffee and never once asked me for anything."

My eyes filled.

He continued.

"You taught me that being respected is different from being feared. And that love isn't something you purchase by making someone's life easier."

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple ring with a pale green stone.

"Will you marry me?"

I began crying.

Then laughed.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"Yes?"

I threw my arms around him.

"Yes, you ridiculous man."

He laughed.

May you like

Then kissed me.

And somewhere in the quiet café, I imagined Dad smiling.
