Chapter 3 - THE THING ELENA HAD BEEN DOING WITHOUT HIM

The black sedan did not hit Elena’s car.

That mattered.

Adrian wanted certainty.

Old Adrian would have decided guilt first and found evidence afterward.

Elena’s letter forced him into a different discipline.

Traffic cameras showed the sedan following her for nearly four miles.

Then disappearing from one camera.

Elena’s Mercedes crashed six minutes later after swerving through an intersection and striking a concrete divider.

A witness remembered another vehicle cutting aggressively into her lane.

No plate.

No clear identification.

Evidence, not conclusion.

Police opened an investigation.

Adrian stayed out of it.

Mostly.

It was agony.

His instinct was to summon Owen.

Demand answers.

Make fear do the work.

Instead, he authorized independent auditors to seize legal copies of company records under counsel’s supervision.

Vale Meridian’s board was notified.

The Driver Relief Fund was frozen except for emergency claimant payments managed externally.

Owen called six times.

Adrian answered none.

Then another problem arrived.

The press.

A photographer had seen Madison leaving St. Catherine.

By evening:

VALE LOGISTICS BILLIONAIRE AT HOSPITAL WITH MODEL MISTRESS WHILE WIFE FIGHTS FOR LIFE

Photographs showed Adrian holding Madison’s hand.

Then Elena’s bloody gurney in the background.

It was obscene.

Accurate.

Madison released no comment.

For six hours.

Then a source “close to Madison” claimed Adrian had told her his marriage was over.

Also true.

Adrian issued one statement:

My wife was critically injured today. Everything else is secondary. I will not discuss her medical condition or defend my personal conduct. My conduct was indefensible.

His public-relations team begged him to change the final sentence.

He refused.

The stock price fell six percent.

His uncle Frank Vale called from Florida.

“You admitted adultery.”

“I didn't mention adultery.”

“You called yourself indefensible.”

“I was.”

“You're feeding the press.”

“My wife is unconscious.”

“This affects the company.”

Adrian hung up.

Another habit becoming easier.

Elena remained sedated for four days.

The pregnancy continued.

Doctors warned complications could arise.

Adrian learned terms he never wanted to know.

He attended every medical briefing.

He slept in a chair.

Not as performance.

Nobody cared.

On the fifth morning, Elena moved her fingers.

Adrian was half asleep.

“Elena?”

Her eyelids fluttered.

He stood so quickly he knocked over water.

“Nurse!”

Her eyes opened.

Confusion.

Pain.

Then she saw him.

And looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

“Elena.”

Her lips moved.

He leaned closer.

“What?”

“Baby?”

His throat closed.

“Alive.”

Her eyes filled.

“Still there.”

She closed them.

A tear escaped.

Adrian wanted to kiss her hand.

He did not.

A nurse entered.

Doctors followed.

The next hours belonged to medicine.

That evening Elena was more awake.

She looked at him.

“Why are you here?”

“Because you're my wife.”

Her expression turned cold despite exhaustion.

“Interesting timing.”

He deserved that.

“I read your letter.”

She closed her eyes.

“I was going to leave it on your desk.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She swallowed painfully.

“You don't know anything.”

He said nothing.

That seemed to surprise her.

“I found the blue file.”

Her eyes opened.

“Owen?”

“Under independent investigation.”

“Your men?”

“No.”

She studied him.

“Police?”

“Yes.”

“Auditors?”

“Yes.”

She stared for a moment.

“Good.”

Then:

“Madison?”

“Gone.”

Elena gave the faintest laugh.

“You expect a medal?”

“No.”

Good answer.

She looked toward the window.

“Divorce papers are with Samuel.”

“I'll sign them.”

Her head turned.

That surprised her more.

“No argument?”

“No.”

“No threats?”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

He thought.

“For you to recover.”

“And after?”

He forced himself to answer honestly.

“Whatever you choose.”

She looked away.

Then said:

“You don't know how much I hated you.”

His chest tightened.

“I believe you.”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“I hated that I still loved you.”

Adrian's eyes filled.

“Elena…”

“Don't.”

He stopped.

She continued.

“I found Madison's apartment receipt in your coat seven months ago.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I almost confronted you.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because your father died that week.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Of course.

Even betrayed, Elena protected his grief.

“Then I waited.”

She stared at the ceiling.

“After the funeral, you disappeared for two nights.”

He had been with Madison.

“I knew.”

Elena continued.

“And something in me just…”

She exhaled.

“…stopped reaching.”

Adrian thought of all the nights she moved farther across the bed.

He had called her cold.

“She wanted me to ask for attention,” he whispered.

“What?”

“Madison.”

He looked at her.

“She demanded everything.”

“And I mistook that for love.”

Elena stared.

“That isn't my problem anymore.”

“No.”

He meant it.

She studied him.

Then the door opened.

Julia Reyes entered carrying flowers.

Elena smiled.

A real smile.

The first Adrian had seen.

“Julia.”

The woman approached carefully.

“How are you?”

“Apparently difficult to kill.”

Julia laughed and cried.

Adrian stood.

“You're Julia Reyes.”

Her expression changed.

“Yes.”

“I’m Adrian Vale.”

“I know.”

Not warmly.

Good.

“I’m sorry about your husband.”

Julia looked at Elena.

Then back at him.

“Your wife already said that.”

Adrian swallowed.

“I know.”

Julia held out a folder.

“These are copies of the claims Elena asked me to keep outside Vale Meridian.”

Adrian took them.

Then Julia said:

“My husband worked for your company eighteen years.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You know now.”

That line followed him for years.

Because it was true of almost everything.

He knew his workers existed.

He knew his wife existed.

He knew loyalty.

Marriage.

Responsibility.

But only in ways that did not demand uncomfortable attention.

He knew now.

And knowledge arriving after damage did not erase the damage.

May you like

It merely created a responsibility for what came next.
