Chapter 5 - THE MISTRESS

Vanessa sat at my kitchen island drinking my wine.

Dominic moved toward her.

I stopped him.

“No.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Still managing him.”

“Still sleeping with married men.”

“Fair.”

She looked exhausted.

No makeup.

No silver dress.

No performance.

“I didn't come to fight.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because Martin Quinn isn't my father.”

Dominic froze.

Vanessa continued.

“He recruited me when I was nineteen.”

Martin Quinn ran a private intelligence operation.

Blackmail.

Corporate infiltration.

Political leverage.

Vale Maritime was one target.

Mercer-Hale another.

Vanessa's job had been to get close to Dominic.

The affair wasn't accidental.

She had studied him.

Learned what he wanted.

Then become it.

Dominic looked nauseated.

“Was any of it real?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Does that question sound familiar?”

His eyes moved to me.

The cruelty of it was perfect.

Vanessa handed me a key.

“Martin has the original records.”

“Where?”

“Meridian.”

I frowned.

“The club?”

“Beneath it.”

Meridian wasn't merely a gathering place for Chicago elites.

Its founders had maintained private archives for generations.

Secrets used to guarantee cooperation.

Martin had gained access through the club's former archivist.

“He plans to release the Vale records selectively,” Vanessa said.

“Why?”

“To destroy Dominic and force Mercer-Hale to seize the ports.”

I understood.

“Then he'll target the trust.”

“Yes.”

Richard entered behind us.

“How?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“By proving Evelyn violated fiduciary rules to benefit her husband.”

The forged signatures.

The marriage.

Halcyon.

Everything was designed to create the appearance that I had secretly manipulated trust assets to enrich Dominic.

If regulators believed it, Mercer-Hale could be dismantled.

Dominic stared at Vanessa.

“You destroyed my marriage for this.”

She looked at me.

“No.”

Then back at him.

“You did that yourself.”

I hated her.

But she was right.

Vanessa offered to testify.

In exchange, she wanted protection.

Dominic refused.

“You expect me to help you?”

I answered.

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because this isn't revenge.”

That sentence became the dividing line between us.

Dominic wanted to punish.

I wanted to stop Martin.

Richard arranged federal contact.

For forty-eight hours, everything appeared to work.

Then Vanessa was kidnapped.

The security camera captured Martin himself taking her.

He left one message.

For me.

MIDNIGHT. MERIDIAN ARCHIVE. COME ALONE OR EVERYTHING BURNS.

Dominic said no.

Richard said no.

The FBI said absolutely not.

I went anyway.

Not alone.

But not with them.

I took someone Martin Quinn had forgotten existed.

An eighty-one-year-old woman named Margaret Lowell.

The Supreme Court justice seated beside me at the gala.

And Meridian's longest-serving member.

She knew every hidden door in the building.

At 11:58 p.m., Justice Lowell opened a service passage behind the wine cellar.

“Your mother used this entrance,” she whispered.

I stared.

“My mother was here?”

Margaret smiled sadly.

May you like

“Evelyn, your mother helped build the archive.”
