Chapter 12 - THE DIVORCE THAT SET US FREE

Our divorce was finalized the following spring.

I wore a gray suit to the courthouse.

Nothing dramatic.

No diamonds.

No expensive handbag.

Just clothes I'd bought with my own salary.

Dominic arrived with his attorney.

He looked tired.

But calmer than I'd seen him in years.

We signed the final documents.

The property arrangements had been negotiated through counsel.

I retained my farmhouse and separate savings.

We established appropriate financial support and parenting arrangements for Isabella.

Dominic accepted his responsibilities without attempting to force reconciliation.

When the proceedings ended, we stepped into the hallway.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

"Emma."

I looked at him.

"Yes?"

He swallowed.

"I know I don't deserve forgiveness."

I considered.

"Forgiveness isn't something you can demand."

He nodded.

"I know."

I looked toward the courthouse windows.

Then said:

"I don't hate you, Dominic."

His eyes filled.

"But I can't be your wife."

He closed his eyes.

"I understand."

I took a breath.

"I hope you become the father Isabella deserves."

He nodded.

"I will try."

I smiled sadly.

"Then keep trying."

Outside, the air smelled of rain.

I walked toward my car.

Dominic called my name one last time.

I turned.

He looked at me.

"Are you happy?"

I considered.

"Not every day."

He nodded.

"But more often than I used to be."

His face softened.

"Good."

I smiled.

"Goodbye, Dominic."

He nodded.

"Goodbye, Emma."

I got into my car.

And drove away.

Not running.

May you like

Not hiding.

Just leaving a chapter of my life that had finally ended.
