Chapter 1 - THE LAST HELICOPTER

When the hurricane warning reached our private-island resort, my husband took the last helicopter with his mistress and left me behind. He thought he had made the choice that would protect his future, but that single decision would threaten everything he believed was his. And the most shocking part was what he had forgotten about the island itself.

My name is Olivia Caldwell, and the day Grant underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.

The helicopter blades tore through the rain as I stood on the helipad, my white silk blouse soaked against my skin.

Six years of marriage.

And my husband was standing with another woman tucked beneath his arm.

Sloane Vance.

His senior brand consultant.

The woman whose perfume I had smelled on him when he kissed my cheek the day before.

The pilot shouted over the wind.

“Only two seats with this fuel load.”

I looked at Grant.

He looked at Sloane.

She pressed a trembling hand to her mouth.

“I can’t stay here,” she whispered.

Grant put a hand on her back.

“She’s pregnant,” he said.

The storm kept moving.

The helicopter blades kept chopping the air.

My husband had just announced that his mistress was carrying a child while we stood in the path of a hurricane.

I did not scream.

I asked one question.

“How far along?”

Sloane blinked.

Grant glared at me.

“That’s not the point.”

“It is if you’re using her uterus as an evacuation credential.”

His face darkened.

“You’re being cold.”

“No,” I said. “I’m being specific.”

Sloane’s helpless expression slipped for a second.

Underneath it was something unmistakable.

She was certain she had won.

Grant turned to the pilot.

“She goes.”

“And me?” I asked.

He would not look at me.

“You can wait for the next flight.”

The pilot answered before I could.

“There is no next flight scheduled, sir.”

Grant heard him.

The staff heard him.

He still climbed into the helicopter, with Sloane following.

The door closed.

Through the rain-streaked window, Sloane smiled at me.

Grant looked away.

I stood there while the helicopter lifted into the dark sky.

He had left his wife on an island facing a hurricane, and he had done it in front of the people who worked for him.

But he had made one mistake.

Grant ran the hospitality company that managed Halcyon Cay.

Managing something and owning it were not the same.

My father had understood that distinction long before I married Grant.

And I knew something about the island that my husband had apparently stopped remembering.

I touched the pearls at my throat, turned toward the resort manager, and spoke calmly.

“Get me to the emergency command center.”

His face was pale.

“Mrs. Caldwell, I am so sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

He was frightened.

But I was not asking him for sympathy.

I needed to know what the resort had preserved.

“Every evacuation decision is recorded, isn’t it?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“And the executive aircraft logs are synced to the mainland server?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I looked toward the sky where Grant had vanished with Sloane.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

“And the island cameras are still live?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Good,” I said.

“Because my husband just made the most expensive decision of his life.”
