Chapter 9 - THE DRESS I REFUSED TO BURN

The wedding dress remained in a garment bag for eleven months.

Chloe wanted me to burn it.

Roman suggested evidence preservation until the criminal case ended.

Dad couldn't look at it.

I kept it.

When Preston eventually accepted a plea agreement on several charges while fighting others, my attorney told me the physical dress was no longer needed.

I unzipped the bag.

Ivory silk.

Hand embroidery.

The seam still torn.

I touched the place his hand had ripped.

For months, I had remembered five hundred people staring.

Then I remembered something else.

A woman near the third pew had stood.

My old teacher.

She removed her shawl and began walking toward me before Roman reached the altar.

Another guest shouted at Preston.

Chloe tried pushing through security.

Dad moved despite the guards.

I had believed everyone simply watched.

That wasn't true.

Trauma had edited the memory.

Some people had tried.

Not enough to save me.

Enough to remind me I had never been as alone as I thought.

I did not repair the dress.

Did not burn it.

I cut one small piece from the damaged seam.

Framed it beneath a sentence:

THE DAY I STOPPED PAYING OTHER PEOPLE'S DEBTS WITH MY LIFE.

Chloe called it dramatic.

Roman called it accurate.

Dad cried.

May you like

Dad cried more now.

Probably healthy.
