Chapter 8 - LAURA FINALLY ASKED DANIEL THE QUESTION SHE HAD AVOIDED

Months later, Laura and Daniel sat on the patio.
The dessert table was gone.
The pantry camera remained.
Laura hated looking at it.
Daniel asked:
“Should we remove it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Then she realized.
Because the camera proved she had not imagined things.
For years, Margaret called Laura oversensitive.
Controlling.
Dramatic.
The footage had become more than evidence.
It was validation.
Daniel said:
“You never needed video to prove she treated you badly.”
Laura looked at him.
“I needed you to believe me.”
Silence.
There.
The marriage wound.
Not only what Margaret did.
What Daniel refused to see.
Laura asked:
“If there had been no camera, would you have believed Eli?”
Daniel answered too slowly.
She noticed.
He closed his eyes.
“Eventually.”
Wrong.
Then:
“I hate that answer.”
“So do I.”
Laura stood.
“I need more than apologies.”
“I know.”
“What?”
“Change.”
“Yes.”
“And I need you to understand that what happened to Eli was not the first problem.”
Daniel looked at her.
“The first problem was years ago.”
“When your mother insulted me and you called it personality.”
“When she undermined me and you called it love.”
“When she ignored boundaries and you told me to be the bigger person.”
Her eyes filled.
“Eli got hurt after a decade of you teaching her that our no was negotiable.”
Daniel started crying.
“Yes.”
No defense.
No counterattack.
Just yes.
They entered couples therapy.
Not because Laura planned to leave.
Because staying without repair would simply become another form of denial.
Daniel learned boundaries.
Laura learned not to wait until resentment became silence.
They rebuilt.
May you like
Slowly.
