Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THOMAS BENNETT

The investigation into Thomas's death was reopened.
At first, Isabella was afraid to hope.
His death had been ruled an accident.
A fall at a construction site.
A tragedy.
Nothing more.
But the new evidence raised questions.
The safety logs had been altered.
A supervisor had signed off on equipment inspections he later admitted he hadn't performed.
And a witness who had left the company after Thomas's death came forward.
He described pressure from Mercer to keep the project moving despite dangerous conditions.
The investigation did not establish that Mercer had ordered Thomas killed.
But it revealed that his company had concealed serious safety failures and that those failures had contributed to the fatal accident.
For Isabella, the distinction mattered.
She had spent years wondering whether Thomas had simply been unlucky.
Now she knew his concerns had been ignored.
And that people had hidden the truth.
When the findings became public, she cried for nearly an hour.
I sat beside her.
I didn't tell her everything would be fine.
I didn't promise to make the pain disappear.
I simply stayed.
Finally, she whispered:
“He tried to protect people.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“He knew the building wasn't safe.”
“Yes.”
She covered her face.
“And they made him look careless.”
I felt my chest tighten.
Then she looked at me.
“Thank you for believing me.”
I shook my head.
“You gave us the evidence.”
May you like
She smiled through tears.
“And you helped me find the courage to use it.”
