Chapter 8 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED

The ballroom was decorated anyway.

White roses.

Gold chairs.

Four hundred place settings.

From the outside, Valenti House looked prepared for a wedding.

Inside, federal investigators occupied two rooms on the lower level.

Adrian had spent years avoiding law enforcement whenever possible.

Now he invited them into his house.

That told me how much had changed.

Guests began arriving at five.

Most had no idea.

Vivian arrived at 5:40 wearing her wedding dress.

That shocked me more than anything.

She knew Adrian knew.

She came anyway.

Maybe arrogance becomes a form of insanity when it survives too long.

She found me near Eleanor's room.

“You.”

I said nothing.

“This started because of you.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“If you'd stayed where you belonged—”

“You hit an old woman.”

“She was destroying my life.”

“You did that yourself.”

Vivian laughed bitterly.

“You think Adrian cares about you?”

“I don't need him to.”

That answer hurt her more than anything else I could have said.

Because Vivian couldn't imagine value that didn't come from being chosen by someone powerful.

She looked at my uniform.

“You'll always be staff.”

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“And you're still under arrest.”

Her face changed.

Behind her stood two federal agents.

The arrests happened quietly at first.

Victor in the service corridor.

Camilla in the library.

Vivian beside Eleanor's bedroom.

Then one guest saw.

Then another.

Whispers spread through the ballroom.

No ceremony occurred.

Instead Adrian walked onto the wedding platform alone.

Four hundred people stared.

He took the microphone.

“This wedding is canceled.”

A wave moved through the room.

“There will be rumors tomorrow.”

He paused.

“Some will be true.”

Another pause.

“People close to my family exploited our trust, manipulated company assets and harmed my mother.”

Silence.

“I won't discuss an active investigation.”

Then he looked toward Eleanor.

She sat in her wheelchair at the edge of the ballroom.

Rachel beside her.

I stood behind them.

Adrian continued.

“But I will say this.”

His eyes moved through the room.

“Loyalty is not obedience.”

That sentence stayed with me.

“Anyone who tells you silence is the price of belonging isn't asking for loyalty. They're asking for permission.”

He handed the microphone back.

No dramatic threats.

No public destruction.

No announcement that his enemies would pay.

Just truth.

For Adrian Valenti, that was more revolutionary.

Later, when the ballroom had emptied, I was gathering glasses.

Habit.

Adrian appeared.

“You don't have to do that.”

“Somebody does.”

“We have staff.”

I looked at him.

He realized.

“Right.”

I smiled.

He picked up a tray.

“What are you doing?”

“Apparently somebody does.”

“You're terrible at that.”

“I own restaurants.”

“That has nothing to do with carrying glasses.”

He dropped one.

It shattered.

We both stared.

Then I started laughing.

He did too.

It was the strangest ending to a wedding day I'd ever imagined.

Except the story wasn't over.

Because the next morning, investigators opened Camilla's private safe.

Inside was a letter from Lorenzo Valenti.

Written thirty-nine years earlier.

Addressed to Adrian.

May you like

And it proved Eleanor had lied about one final thing.
