Chapter 8 - I SOLD THE BEACH HOUSE

Everyone expected me to preserve Hannah’s beach house forever.

I didn’t.

The decision shocked Evelyn.

“Marcus.”

“I know.”

“That house has been in our family for decades.”

“I know.”

“It belongs to Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Then why sell?”

I handed her Hannah’s letter.

She read it.

Then cried.

We discussed it with trust counsel.

The house required increasing maintenance.

Taxes had become absurd.

Most importantly, Lily no longer liked visiting.

Sarah and Julian had turned it into a symbol of danger.

“Is this because of me?” Lily asked.

“No.”

“But if I liked the house, would you keep it?”

“Maybe.”

“So I decide?”

“You get a voice.”

She thought.

“I like Grandma’s cottage better.”

Evelyn owned a small place farther north.

Two bedrooms.

No ocean view.

Lily loved catching crabs off the dock.

We sold the Montauk property under court supervision.

Every dollar remained protected for Lily.

Then we changed the trust structure.

Independent co-trustees.

Stronger controls.

No single guardian could access substantial funds without external approval.

Money should protect Lily’s choices.

Not make her valuable to predators.

Part of the proceeds funded programs Hannah had cared about.

Pediatric hospice support.

Bereavement counseling.

The rest remained Lily’s future.

When the sale closed, I took Lily to the beach one final time.

We stood barefoot near the water.

She held my hand.

“Was Mommy happy here?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sad?”

“Yes.”

“Then why sell it?”

“Because something can be important without belonging to us forever.”

She considered that.

“Like people?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She bent down.

Picked up a shell.

“Can I keep this?”

“Absolutely.”

We walked away with one shell.

Not a house.

May you like

Enough.
