Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED HIDING

Emma's relationship with Gabriel became public.

Photographs appeared online.

Articles speculated.

Comment sections filled with cruelty.

Some people mocked her weight.

Others accused her of chasing money.

A few claimed Gabriel could never truly love a woman who looked like her.

Emma tried not to read them.

But sometimes she did.

One evening, Gabriel found her sitting alone in the kitchen.

Her phone lay face down.

He sat beside her.

“What's wrong?”

Emma shook her head.

“Nothing.”

He waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“People think I'm not enough for you.”

Gabriel stared.

“Who?”

She laughed sadly.

“Everyone.”

He took her hand.

“Emma.”

She looked at him.

“I spent most of my life surrounded by people who told me what I wanted to hear.”

He paused.

“You're the first person in years who told me the truth even when you were afraid.”

Her eyes filled.

He continued.

“You saw my daughter when everyone else looked away.”

Emma shook her head.

“That doesn't make me special.”

Gabriel smiled.

“No.”

He touched her cheek.

“It makes you kind.”

She swallowed.

“And I love you.”

Emma froze.

Gabriel looked almost frightened.

“I should have said that sooner.”

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

She laughed softly.

“You're terrible at timing.”

He smiled.

“I know.”

Emma leaned closer.

“I love you too.”

And when he kissed her, it was gentle.

Unhurried.

Without an audience.

For the first time, Emma didn't feel the need to make herself smaller.

She simply let herself be loved.
