Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CAR BOMB

Five years earlier, Roman Gallow's father and two older brothers died in a car bombing.

The explosion occurred outside a warehouse near the port.

Roman had been twenty-nine.

He'd spent years believing a rival syndicate was responsible.

The deaths had forced him into leadership.

He had inherited a criminal organization, a collection of legitimate businesses, and a network of enemies who wanted him dead.

He'd responded with ruthless efficiency.

Consolidated control.

Removed rivals.

Expanded security.

And convinced himself that survival required becoming colder than the men around him.

Now, reviewing Donovan's financial records, he found something unexpected.

A payment made five years earlier.

To a company connected to the warehouse where the bombing occurred.

The amount was small compared with the stolen millions.

But the date mattered.

Three days before the explosion.

Roman stared.

He called Luca.

"Come to my office."

When Luca arrived, Roman showed him the record.

Luca's face changed.

"What is that?"

"A payment."

"From Donovan?"

"Through one of his companies."

Luca studied it.

"That doesn't prove anything."

"I know."

Roman looked at the date.

"But it gives us a reason to ask questions."

The next morning, Roman's attorney provided the records to investigators.

The old bombing case was reopened for review.

And for the first time in five years, Roman considered the possibility that the man responsible for destroying his family had been sitting at his poker table all along.
