Chapter 6 - THE BIRTHDAY GALA BOOKS

Victoria’s birthday gala became evidence.

The hotel invoices were paid partly by Sterling Legacy Events.

Sterling Legacy had received money from accounts Alexander believed were supporting Sophia.

White orchids.

$38,000.

Champagne.

$62,000.

Entertainment.

$45,000.

Luxury transportation.

$27,000.

Alexander read the invoices twice.

Sophia’s bread rolls had been thrown away from a banquet partly funded with money intended for her care.

The symbolism was so ugly it almost felt fictional.

Lauren refused to discuss it publicly.

Good.

Sophia deserved privacy.

But reporters had already discovered enough.

Headlines exploded.

STERLING FAMILY FUNDS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

BILLIONAIRE’S MOTHER ACCUSED OF DIVERTING GRANDDAUGHTER SUPPORT.

Alexander issued one statement:

“My daughter is a child, not a public storyline. I will not discuss her private circumstances. Financial records will be addressed through the appropriate legal process.”

Then he stopped talking.

Victoria did not.

She gave an interview.

“I never stole a penny.”

She looked elegant.

Calm.

Wounded.

“Alexander’s former wife has exploited his guilt.”

Lauren watched five seconds before turning it off.

“Same Victoria.”

Alexander asked:

“Do you want me to respond?”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

Lauren smiled slightly.

“You’re getting better.”

He laughed.

Then she said:

“I want the records public when legally appropriate.”

“Okay.”

“And I want Sophia’s name redacted.”

“Done.”

The forensic report eventually showed $6.7 million in questionable expenditures.

Not all illegal.

Some simply unauthorized.

Some blatantly deceptive.

Victoria had used trust funds to preserve family image.

Payments to reporters.

Settlements involving distant relatives.

A luxury apartment for one cousin who stayed loyal.

Private-school payments conditioned on family cooperation.

A pattern emerged.

Money as discipline.

Generosity as control.

Alexander finally understood his childhood.

Expensive schools.

Cars.

Trips.

Everything attached to expectations.

Victoria never said:

Obey me or lose this.

She didn't need to.

Everyone understood.

Alexander had grown into a billionaire believing freedom meant having enough money that nobody could control him.

Meanwhile, his mother controlled him through the one currency he never audited.

Approval.

That realization changed him.

He began restructuring the family office.

Independent trustees.

Separate child-benefit administration.

No family member could redirect payments alone.

Quarterly external audits.

Automatic recipient confirmations.

Boring safeguards.

Victoria called them humiliating.

Alexander called them overdue.

Then she retaliated.

She filed a petition challenging Alexander’s fitness as trustee of the descendant trust.

Claim:

His renewed relationship with Lauren compromised his judgment.

Alexander laughed when he read it.

Lauren did not.

“She’s going to come after me forever.”

“No.”

Alexander put the filing down.

“She’s going to lose access.”

“To what?”

“Everything she controls because nobody challenged it.”

For the first time, Alexander did not sound angry.

May you like

He sounded decided.
