Chapter 11 - THE EMPIRE BUILT ON BLOOD

The memory card contained financial records, shipping manifests, photographs, and recorded conversations.
Michael Vance had spent months documenting an international trafficking network.
The operation involved corrupt shipping executives, private security contractors, and members of the Vanel organization.
Vittorio Vanel had approved the network.
Greg had helped enforce it.
And several powerful men were still involved.
Dante watched the recordings in silence.
When they ended, he looked physically sick.
Luca stood beside him.
“Dante.”
He didn't answer.
“Your father is dead. You didn't know.”
Dante looked up.
“But I inherited the empire he built.”
Luca said nothing.
Dante stood.
“Then I inherited the responsibility to dismantle what remains.”
Over the following days, Dante worked with independent attorneys and federal investigators.
He turned over the evidence.
Identified remaining operations.
And began shutting down the companies connected to the network.
The consequences were enormous.
Several executives fled.
Others were arrested.
Accounts were frozen.
And Dante's own organization began fracturing.
But he refused to stop.
One evening, he came to the hospital.
I was sitting beside Toby.
Dante stood in the doorway.
“Elena.”
I looked up.
“You look terrible.”
He smiled faintly.
“Thank you.”
I laughed.
Then noticed the exhaustion in his eyes.
“What happened?”
He sat beside me.
“I gave the authorities everything.”
I stared.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“Even evidence that could hurt you?”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He glanced toward Toby.
“Because your father died trying to stop something my family should never have allowed.”
His voice broke.
“I can't change what happened to him.”
He looked back at me.
“But I can make sure it doesn't keep happening.”
My eyes filled.

For the first time, I saw Dante Vanel not as the man everyone feared.
But as a man trying to become someone better than the name he'd inherited.
