Chapter 5 - The Locked Room Beneath the Stairs

================================================================================

I left Lily asleep under the dedicated guard of two female patrol officers at the hospital, accompanied by my sister, Rachel, who had rushed down from Milwaukee the moment she received my call.

At 10:30 PM, I returned to the Oak Park house with Detective Vance.

The house was illuminated by halogen crime scene lamps. Yellow evidence tape was stretched across the living room arches, but the primary forensic team was gathered in the basement.

Beneath the basement staircase, hidden behind a false drywall panel that Caroline had painted to match the foundation, stood an iron door secured with a commercial keypad deadbolt.

The door was unlatched, its frame pried open by the fire department’s hydraulic cutters.

I stepped into the narrow, unventilated space.

The room was four feet wide by six feet long. The floor was bare concrete, covered only by a thin, stained wool blanket and an empty plastic water jug.

Mounted to the concrete wall was a digital infrared surveillance camera, pointed directly at the floor.

Dozens of small, crude scratch marks marked the wooden studs of the wall—tally marks drawn with the broken tip of a purple crayon.

Forty-two tally marks.

Forty-two days of isolation in the pitch-black dark while I sat sixty floors above the city drafting blueprints for corporate skyscrapers.

Detective Vance illuminated the upper shelf above the door frame.

Sitting on the wood was a clear plastic container containing six empty prescription bottles of Lorazepam—heavy pediatric sedatives prescribed under Victoria’s name, used to keep Lily quiet whenever contractors or neighbors approached the house.

“They didn't just lock her in here, David,” Detective Vance said, his voice trembling with rare, professional fury. “They chemically incapacitated her to ensure she couldn't scream.”

I reached down and picked up a tiny fragment of purple wax from the cold floorboards.

My hands clenched into fists so tight my fingernails pierced my palms.

“They are going to pay for every single mark on that wall, Marcus,” I said, looking into the darkness of the cell. “Every single one.”
