Chapter 1

I was five thousand miles away from home when a weeping nurse called me and stated, ""Ethan… they br0ke both of your wife’s legs."" A guy then snatched the receiver, chuckled, and murmured, ""Come do something about it, soldier. My dad owns the police."" Fourteen hours later, I touched down on American soil—and a pair of sheriff’s squad cars were already waiting for me.
The nurse was sobbing so intensely that her words were barely coherent. Then she spoke the sentence that caused the bl00d in my veins to run ice cold: ""Ethan… they br0ke both of your wife’s legs.""
I stood in a military staging barracks five thousand miles from my house, still laced into my dirty c0mbat boots, while warning sirens buzzed somewhere outside the thick walls.
""What happened to Claire?""
""She was admitted to Riverside Medical Center thirty minutes ago. Multiple fr:actures. Severe head tra:uma. she has not stopped asking for you.""
Before I had a chance to speak, the phone scraped harshly against a surface.
A man chuckled into the receiver.
I knew that exact laugh.
Logan Whitmore.
""Come do something about it, soldier,"" he taunted softly. ""My dad owns the police.""
The connection dropped.
For three long seconds, I stared blankly at my dark phone screen.
Then I sprang into action.
I didn’t pu:nch a hole in the wall. I didn’t scr:eam in rage. I didn’t shout thr:eats that Logan could easily record to frame me.
I contacted my commanding officer.
""My wife has been severely att:acked. I am requesting emergency leave.""
Fourteen hours later, my flight landed on the tarmac in North Carolina.
Two sheriff’s vehicles were idling right outside the main terminal.
Deputy Ryan Cole stepped out first, resting his hand comfortably near his duty weapon.
""Ethan Parker?""
""That's me.""
""You are going to need to come with us.""
""Am I being placed under arr:est?""
He paused.
That gave me my very first clue.
""No. Sheriff Richard Whitmore just wishes to have a little conversation.""
Sheriff Richard Whitmore was Logan’s father, the very man who had treated Fairview County like his own personal kingdom for twenty-two years.
Folks around town always joked that his badge needed a royal crown stamped on it.
I voluntarily climbed into the back of the police cruiser.
At the station, Whitmore was seated behind his massive desk sipping black coffee.
""You military boys always assume those shiny uniforms make you untouchable.""
""My wife is currently undergoing surgery.""
""And you are wasting your time sitting here because you need to understand how things work.""
He slid a police file in my direction.
According to the typed report, Claire had been trespassing on Logan’s construction land, thr:eatened the workers, and accidentally fell down a flight of unfinished stairs.
I read over the paper twice.
Then I cracked a smile.
Whitmore’s eyes narrowed in suspicion.
""What exactly is funny?""
""Nothing at all.""
He leaned his weight forward.
""My boy claims your wife has been har:assing him for several months. I suggest you pick her up when she wakes up and completely forget this tragic little accident.""
""And what if I don’t?""
His arrogant smile returned to his face.
""Then your life is going to get extremely complicated.""
I got up from the chair.
""Am I cleared to leave?""
He looked frustrated that I hadn’t totally lost my temper.
""Of course you are.""
Back at the hospital, the thick tension was suffocating. Armed deputies loitered around the nurses' station, and the medical personnel refused to look me in the eye. Claire looked incredibly tiny underneath the sterile white blankets. Cold metal frames kept both of her shattered legs completely still.
Her face was terribly br:uised.
When she finally fluttered her eyes open, she whispered, ""They didn’t find it, Ethan.""
I leaned in closely, dropping my voice down to a mere breath. ""Find what?""
Her fingers weakly squeezed my hand, and her eyes darted toward the frosted glass of the closed door. ""The evidence. Logan wasn't merely st:ealing real estate. It is so much worse... and they know I tucked it away.""
She choked down a sob, causing her heart monitor to spike wildly. ""He promised we have until dawn to hand it over to him. Or they’re coming after my parents next.""
That was the exact moment I saw the entire picture.
This hospital wasn't a place of healing. It was an unseen pr!son. They hadn’t simply att:acked a random soldier’s wife.

They had aggressively backed the wrong woman into a corner.
And Sheriff Whitmore had absolutely no earthly idea what I actually did for the military...
