Chapter 8 - THE DAY ADRIAN DIED

The announcement came Monday morning.

Adrian Moretti had suffered a severe medical episode.

Private ambulance.

Closed gates.

No visitors.

By noon, rumors spread through New York.

Adrian unconscious.

Possible organ failure.

Doctors uncertain.

Marcus Vale arrived at the estate at 12:43.

He moved quickly.

Too quickly.

Within two hours, he called corporate counsel.

At four, he activated the emergency management clause.

At six, he summoned the Moretti Holdings board for the next morning.

Matteo watched everything through legally authorized surveillance connected to the ongoing poisoning investigation.

Adrian watched from a secure room elsewhere.

Alive.

Very much awake.

Grace sat beside him.

“You look pleased.”

“I am.”

“Your best friend is trying to steal your company while he thinks you're dying.”

“When you phrase it that way…”

She looked at him.

“Don't.”

“Fine.”

At the board meeting, Marcus entered carrying medical documents.

Signed by Dr. Price.

Adrian medically incapable of performing executive duties.

Expected duration:

Indefinite.

Marcus spoke solemnly.

“We all love Adrian.”

Watching from the monitor, Adrian laughed once.

Grace stared.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Marcus continued:

“But the organization must survive.”

There it was.

He submitted proxy documents.

Some forged.

Some altered.

Then proposed emergency transfer of voting authority.

Corporate counsel asked:

“Have we confirmed with Mr. Moretti’s independent physician?”

Marcus answered:

“Dr. Price is his physician.”

Wrong.

Not anymore.

The door opened.

Federal agents entered.

State investigators.

Financial-crimes officers.

Marcus stood.

“What is this?”

Then the screen behind the board table turned on.

Adrian appeared live.

Marcus went white.

“Good morning.”

Nobody breathed.

“Adrian?”

“Disappointed?”

Marcus looked toward the doors.

Blocked.

Adrian continued:

“I’ve watched you forge two signatures in the last hour.”

Marcus’s face changed.

“I did nothing—”

“Dr. Price is in custody.”

Silence.

“And the lab has my medication.”

Marcus stopped.

Adrian’s voice remained calm.

“So let's stop wasting time.”

Marcus looked around.

Then laughed.

“You think they care about medicine?”

He turned toward investigators.

“You know what this man is?”

Adrian answered:

“They do.”

Marcus froze.

That was the final piece.

Adrian had already given prosecutors access to records necessary to investigate parts of his own organization in exchange for structured cooperation.

Not immunity.

Accountability.

Marcus had lost his blackmail.

“You would burn your own empire?”

Adrian looked at him through the screen.

“No.”

Then:

“I’m burning the part you taught me should never have existed.”

Marcus's face changed.

Rage.

“You owe me everything.”

Adrian stared.

“You killed my family.”

Marcus went silent.

Nobody in the boardroom moved.

“You gave Torres my route.”

Marcus whispered:

“You can't prove—”

“Payments.”

Silence.

“Vehicle-security changes.”

Silence.

“Claire’s records.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

There.

Not full confession.

Enough.

Marcus continued, anger finally removing caution.

“You were walking away from the businesses your father built.”

“For my family.”

“You were weak.”

Adrian stared.

“My four-year-old asked me for one day.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“And that one day cost you everything.”

Wrong sentence.

Adrian’s face became completely still.

Grace grabbed his hand before he could respond.

He looked down.

Her fingers.

Then back at Marcus.

“No.”

His voice changed.

“That day gave me the last happy memory I have of them.”

Marcus's expression flickered.

Adrian continued:

“You don't get to poison that too.”

Agents cuffed Marcus.

He struggled once.

Then stopped.

Adrian ended the feed.

The room around him became silent.

Grace still held his hand.

“It’s over.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“The arrest is over.”

He looked toward the dark screen.

May you like

“Now I have to figure out what survives me telling the truth.”
