Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY THAT CHOSE EACH OTHER

Three years after the plane crash, the investigation finally concluded.

Richard Sterling was convicted of multiple serious crimes connected to financial fraud, kidnapping, and the conspiracy surrounding Daniel and Isabelle's deaths.

The Sterling family empire was reorganized.

Arthur stepped down from daily management.

Independent trustees took control of the museum's acquisitions program.

And a portion of the family's wealth was dedicated to restitution for those harmed by Richard's schemes.

Arthur moved to a quieter house outside the city.

A garden.

A library.

A workshop.

And enough room for Leo to run.

Clara visited often.

She brought books.

Restoration projects.

And occasionally, terrible homemade cookies.

Leo loved them anyway.

One afternoon, Arthur found Clara standing beneath an old oak tree.

She looked thoughtful.

“Everything all right?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

He studied her.

“Then why do you look sad?”

Clara laughed softly.

“I was thinking about my mother.”

Arthur nodded.

“I think about Daniel every day.”

They stood quietly.

Then Clara said:

“Do you ever wonder whether we could have saved them?”

Arthur looked toward the garden.

“Every day.”

She swallowed.

“And?”

He turned toward her.

“I've learned that grief makes us believe we had more control than we did.”

Clara's eyes filled.

Arthur continued.

“We can't change what happened.”

He looked toward the house.

“But we can decide what happens next.”

That evening, Leo surprised them.

He had been practicing piano.

For months.

Without telling anyone.

He led them into the sitting room.

Sat on the bench.

And began playing.

The Winter Lullaby.

Clara covered her mouth.

Arthur stood motionless.

The melody filled the room.

Soft.

Gentle.

Familiar.

When Leo finished, he turned toward them.

“Mommy used to play that.”

Arthur nodded through tears.

“Yes, she did.”

Leo smiled.

“I wanted to play it without being scared.”

Clara began crying.

Leo climbed down.

Walked toward her.

And hugged her.

“It's okay,” he whispered.

She held him tightly.

May you like

“I know.”

And for the first time, the melody belonged to happiness as well as grief.
