Chapter 4 - THE MISTRESS WHO THOUGHT SHE WAS THE PARTNER

Vanessa requested a meeting.

Her lawyer contacted Sophia.

I almost refused.

Then the audit committee asked me not to.

Vanessa might cooperate.

We met in a law office.

No Adrian.

Vanessa looked different without the silver dress and banquet confidence.

Thirty-six.

Brilliant on paper.

MBA.

Former consultant.

No executive experience remotely justifying the promotion Adrian tried to give her.

She stared at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I said nothing.

“For the banquet.”

I remained silent.

“For Adrian.”

Still nothing.

She became irritated.

“What do you want me to say?”

“Truth would be efficient.”

Her lawyer touched her arm.

Vanessa took a breath.

“I believed he was leaving you.”

“When?”

“Eight months ago.”

“The affair lasted eleven.”

Her face changed.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you confront him?”

“I was collecting information.”

That bothered her.

She had wanted to be secret.

Special.

Instead she had been observed.

“What did Adrian promise you?”

“A future.”

“Be specific.”

She looked away.

“Marriage.”

Of course.

“Control of Strategic Development.”

“Yes.”

“Equity?”

“Eventually.”

“What else?”

Silence.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at me.

“He said after the succession transition, we'd control the company together.”

There.

“What did you think succession transition meant?”

“You stepping back.”

“Why would I?”

“He said you were tired.”

I laughed.

Vanessa flushed.

“He said you wanted philanthropy.”

“I fund philanthropy without surrendering voting control.”

“He said you hated corporate life.”

“I hate banquets.”

That almost made Sophia smile.

Vanessa continued.

“Adrian said the trust would eventually shift.”

“After death?”

“He didn't say.”

“Incapacity?”

Silence.

“What did you know?”

Vanessa’s lawyer interrupted.

“She should not answer speculation.”

I looked at him.

“Then answer documents.”

I placed the POST-ELEANOR whiteboard photograph in front of her.

Vanessa went pale.

“You’ve seen this before.”

“No.”

Lie.

“Vanessa.”

Her hands trembled.

“Not that version.”

“What version?”

“A presentation.”

“What presentation?”

She looked at her lawyer.

He sighed.

“Answer carefully.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Adrian had a succession model.”

“How long ago?”

“Six months.”

Before the banquet.

Before her announced promotion.

“What did it assume?”

“That you transferred voting authority.”

“Voluntarily?”

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.”

“He said you wouldn't have a choice eventually.”

Cold.

“What did you think that meant?”

“I thought legal mechanisms.”

“That phrase should have concerned you.”

“It did.”

“But not enough to leave.”

“No.”

Finally, some truth.

Then I asked:

“Did you receive company money through shell consultancies?”

“No.”

Sophia slid three bank records across the table.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“These are my brother’s companies.”

“Exactly.”

“I didn't control them.”

“Did you receive funds afterward?”

Silence.

“How much?”

“Eight hundred thousand.”

My stomach tightened.

“For services?”

“No.”

Kickback.

Her lawyer closed his eyes.

Vanessa began crying.

“Adrian said everyone did it.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

“He said executive compensation was politically difficult, so consulting structures were cleaner.”

“Cleaner.”

“Yes.”

“Fraud often gets excellent branding.”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

Then:

“I can help.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian is blaming me.”

Of course.

Not conscience.

Self-preservation.

Still useful.

“What do you have?”

She took out a drive.

Adrian’s private strategic files.

Messages.

Draft legal memos.

Financial models.

And one recording.

“I recorded him once.”

“Why?”

“I stopped trusting him.”

Interesting how betrayal educates.

We played it.

Adrian’s voice:

If Eleanor fights, we go medical.

Vanessa:

She’s healthy.

Adrian:

Healthy people can still be impaired.

Vanessa:

You need a doctor.

Adrian:

You need a narrative first.

My entire body went cold.

Then:

Once she’s declared temporarily incapable, I have ninety days. That’s enough.

Vanessa:

Enough for what?

Adrian:

Everything.

The room remained silent after the recording ended.

I looked at Vanessa.

“When?”

“Four weeks ago.”

“You stayed.”

“Yes.”

“You let him humiliate me publicly.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You were going to accept the EVP role.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

I respected that more than tears.

“Why give this now?”

“Because he told investigators I designed the consultancy scheme.”

“Did you?”

“Part of it.”

Again.

Truth.

“But the control plan was his.”

I nodded.

“You understand cooperation won't erase what you did.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She looked at me.

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

That surprised her.

“You slept with my husband.”

Her face tightened.

“But the twenty-three million concerns me more.”

Sophia coughed into her hand.

Vanessa almost smiled.

Almost.

Then I added:

“And your Bentley is still being repossessed.”

The smile disappeared.

May you like

Good.
