Chapter 7 - CAMILLE LOSES THE SPOTLIGHT

Camille’s real crisis arrived four months later.

Not financial.

Social.

She chaired a charity gala.

For weeks, she posted photographs.

Mood boards.

Venue previews.

Floral samples.

Then the event nearly collapsed because the caterer had never received the final deposit.

Old pattern.

Camille assumed someone else handled the unglamorous part.

This time there was no Olivia behind her.

She called.

“I need advice.”

Not money.

Advice.

That mattered.

“What happened?”

She told me.

“How much?”

“Thirty-six thousand due Monday.”

“Do you have the funds?”

“The charity does.”

“Then what do you need from me?”

“I don't know how to untangle the approvals.”

I almost smiled.

“I can show you.”

Not do it.

Show.

We spent two hours on video.

Purchase authorization.

Board signoff.

Payment approval.

Backup vendor.

For once, Camille watched the machinery behind an event.

At the end, she said:

“You did all this for Mom and Dad’s party?”

“Yes.”

“And flowers.”

“Yes.”

“And hotel rooms.”

“Yes.”

“And seating.”

“Yes.”

She stared.

“I thought you just called the restaurant.”

I laughed.

There it was.

Invisible labor.

“You never asked.”

“No.”

She looked ashamed.

“I’m sorry.”

Not everything.

Just that.

It was enough for the day.

The gala succeeded.

Camille posted afterward:

Huge thanks to our finance committee, vendors, volunteers, and everyone who did the work nobody sees in photographs.

She did not mention me.

Good.

That would have turned growth into performance.

Two weeks later, she took me to lunch.

She paid.

I noticed.

Said nothing.

Halfway through, she said:

“Hannah told me something.”

I waited.

“She said she likes being around you because you don't make her earn compliments.”

That hurt.

Camille looked away.

“I’ve been doing Mom to her.”

There are sentences that stop generations.

That was one.

“What are you going to do?”

“Therapy.”

I smiled.

“Terrible experience. Highly recommend.”

She laughed.

For the first time since the anniversary, we sounded like sisters.

Not healed.

Not reset.

May you like

But possible.
