Chapter 8 - CONSEQUENCES

The legal consequences were less dramatic than the sledgehammer deserved.

David paid restitution for the damaged door and porch.

He accepted responsibility related to property damage and agreed to a period of probation under the eventual resolution.

The financial-exploitation investigation focused on the false medical intake, attempts to create misleading capacity evidence, and plans involving title and POA.

Not every ugly plan became a charge.

Good.

Criminal law should not become a revenge machine.

Sarah faced separate consequences for submitting false information and using my name in the medical intake process.

The clinic changed its policy.

No more accepting “verbal patient consent” through relatives for cognitive evaluations without direct confirmation except under properly documented circumstances.

I appreciated that.

Something useful came from ugliness.

My protective order remained for a time.

David communicated only through counsel and then through a family therapist.

Sarah and I had no relationship.

That was fine.

Eventually she and David separated.

Not because I won.

Not because she was exposed as the evil woman who corrupted my innocent son.

Their marriage had been strained by debt and blame long before my house became a fantasy solution.

David told me later:

“We kept solving problems by finding someone else to absorb them.”

That was insightful.

Painfully.

They divorced quietly.

I did not celebrate.

Sarah was not my project anymore.

Neither, in some ways, was David.

That was the hardest parental lesson.

Adult children belong to themselves.

So do their consequences.
