Chapter 8 - THE FILE MY GRANDMOTHER LEFT BEHIND

In January, Daniel invited me to his office.
He had found a letter in my grandmother's private files.
The envelope was addressed to me.
Lauren Bennett — To Be Opened If You Ever Need to Begin Again.
I recognized her handwriting immediately.
My eyes filled.
I opened the letter.
My darling Lauren,
If you are reading this, I suspect life has asked you to make a difficult choice.
I hope you never mistake endurance for love.
You are capable, intelligent, and stronger than you know.
But strength does not mean you must suffer quietly.
I created this protection because I wanted you to have choices.
Use them wisely.
And remember: you were a whole person before anyone called you his wife.
Love always,
Grandma Evelyn.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
For several minutes, I couldn't speak.
Daniel waited.
Finally, I asked:
"Did she know Cole would hurt me?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No. She knew that people can change, and that financial dependence can make leaving difficult."
I looked down.
"She tried to protect me."
"Yes."
Daniel opened another folder.
"There's one more thing."
Inside was a document describing a scholarship program my grandmother had established years earlier.
It supported women returning to professional careers after caregiving interruptions.
The program had been inactive since her death.
I stared at it.
"Why?"
"Funding priorities changed. The trustees focused on other obligations."
I looked at the letter.
Then at the scholarship documents.
"I want to revive it."
Daniel smiled.
"I thought you might."
That afternoon, I returned to Maya's house and found Noah and Lily playing on the living room rug.
Noah was banging two plastic blocks together.
Lily was trying to eat a stuffed rabbit.
Maya laughed.
"Your children are destroying my living room."
I knelt beside them.
For the first time in months, I felt something other than fear.
Purpose.
May you like
I wasn't simply escaping Cole.
I was beginning to remember who I had been before him.
