Chapter 8 - GRACE

Grace was born on a rainy Thursday morning.

Six pounds, eight ounces.

Dark hair.

Angry lungs.

Perfect.

I had prepared myself for terror.

Instead, when they placed her on my chest, the room became astonishingly quiet inside my head.

“Hi,” I whispered.

Grace opened one eye.

I laughed.

After five miscarriages, I had imagined this moment so many times that the real thing felt almost too ordinary.

Warm skin.

Tiny fingers.

A nurse adjusting blankets.

Machines beeping.

Caroline crying.

No angels.

No dramatic music.

Just a baby.

My baby.

Ryan met her two hours later.

He stood beside the bassinet.

For once, he did not touch without asking.

“Can I?”

I nodded.

He lifted Grace.

Then broke.

Not loudly.

He pressed his face against the blanket and cried.

“I’m sorry.”

I knew he was speaking to me.

To Grace.

Maybe to five pregnancies we had never held.

I did not answer.

Some grief does not need immediate conversation.

Evelyn did not meet Grace that day.

My choice.

She had sent flowers.

The card read:

Welcome to our family, Grace.

I returned them.

Not from spite.

Because Grace was not entering Evelyn’s family as a possession.

Evelyn could meet her later if boundaries were respected.

Three weeks afterward, Tessa gave birth to Chloe.

Healthy.

Small.

Very loud, according to Tessa.

Ryan suddenly had two daughters born less than a month apart.

The man who once spoke about needing an heir now spent his evenings learning to sterilize bottles in two different homes.

There was justice in that.

Not punishment.

May you like

Education.
