Chapter 9 - VICTORIA CAME BACK WITHOUT AN EMERALD RING

Five years later, Maya saw Victoria again.

Not at Apex Tower.

At a nonprofit logistics conference in Washington.

Victoria wore a navy suit.

No emerald ring.

No entourage.

She approached carefully.

“Maya.”

“Victoria.”

“I’m surprised you’re here.”

“I founded the event.”

Victoria laughed.

“Of course you did.”

After leaving Cross Global, Victoria spent two years fighting civil claims tied to Vantage Succession Partners.

She repaid disputed fees under settlement.

No criminal conviction against her personally on the forged documents.

Her father received far harsher consequences.

Edmund eventually pleaded guilty to fraud-related offenses connected to the false filings and undisclosed transactions.

Victoria lost much of the mythology around her surname.

Then she did something unexpected.

She took a job.

Actual job.

Restructuring consultant.

No family firm.

No inherited title.

Apparently she was good.

Of course she was.

Entitlement had never meant incompetence.

It meant competence without limits.

Victoria said:

“I owe you an apology.”

Maya smiled faintly.

“You already tried.”

“No.”

“Before, I apologized because I had attacked the wrong person.”

Maya went still.

Victoria continued:

“I thought the lesson was that I should have recognized you.”

Her voice tightened.

“The lesson was that I shouldn't have treated anyone like that.”

There.

Finally.

Maya said nothing.

Victoria touched the edge of her eyebrow.

Not physically.

Gesturing toward Maya’s scar.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya believed her.

Did not need friendship.

Did not need punishment.

“I accept the apology.”

Victoria exhaled.

Then:

“Do you forgive me?”

“I stopped thinking about whether I had to.”

Victoria smiled.

“That sounds like you.”

“Apparently.”

They drank coffee.

Twenty minutes.

Then left separately.

No reconciliation montage.

No partnership.

May you like

Just two women no longer trapped inside the first terrible thing one did to the other.
