Chapter 5 - The Coffee Spilled on Expensive Boots

Veronica stepped forward, leaning against the wooden railing, scowling down at the driveway.
“Russell? Who is this woman? Why are there police cars blocking our driveway?”
Russell took two frantic steps backward, wiping his hands on his designer jeans, trying desperately to piece his shattered composure back together. Like every practiced narcissist, his panic lasted only a few seconds before morphing into a sneer of cold, manufactured superiority.
He straightened his back, kicked a shard of broken ceramic off the porch step, and crossed his arms.
“Well, well,” Russell scoffed, letting out a sharp, theatrical laugh. “The working girl came home without an invitation. Did you get fired from your nursing gig, Maren? Did you run out of old people’s bedpans to change?”
I stopped at the bottom of the porch steps, looking up at him with unblinking, terrifying calm.
“Where are my parents, Russell? Where is Felix?”
Russell rolled his eyes, waving a dismissive, manicured hand. “Your parents were senile freeloaders, Maren. They were ruining the peace of this house. Your father tracked mud onto my imported rugs, and your mother couldn't even operate the smart dishwasher. I placed them in a county-assisted residential home downtown where they belong.”
“You left them on a concrete bench at the bus depot with three plastic bags,” I said, my voice quiet enough that every neighbor peeking through their blinds could hear the razor-sharp edge in it.
Veronica let out an obnoxious snicker. “Listen, honey. I don't know who you think you are, showing up here playing the victim. Russell and I have been building this life for two years. You were absent. You were nothing but a signature on a bank transfer. A real family lives together under one roof.”
“Every brick of this roof was paid for by the sweat of my brow, Veronica,” I replied.
Russell stepped down the first three steps, thrusting his chin forward with an ugly, triumphant grin.
“And that’s where your stupid, uneducated brain fails you, Maren!” Russell laughed loudly. “Check the county land registry! The deed to 442 Whispering Pines is registered solely to Russell Dane. The mortgage was closed in my name. The truck is in my name. You sent money to a joint checking account; under North Carolina law, voluntary marital transfers are considered gifts! You have zero equity. You have zero rights!”
Russell took out his key ring, twirling the brass deadbolt key around his index finger.

“You’re a penniless housemaid with chapped hands. Get off my lawn before I have these deputies arrest you for trespassing on private property.”
