Chapter 3 - UNCLE VINCENT

I did not confront Vincent.
Every instinct I had wanted to.
That was precisely why I didn't.
Claire watched me pace inside one of my safe apartments.
Lila slept upstairs.
Marcus stood by the window.
“People like you always look calmer right before something terrible.”
I looked at Claire.
“People like me?”
“Mafia bosses.”
Fair.
“I’m not doing anything terrible.”
“Yet.”
I almost smiled.
Then:
“If Vincent knows I know, Daniel disappears again.”
“Yes.”
“So we verify.”
“With who?”
“People who don't answer to Vincent.”
That list had become shorter than I liked.
First call:
My attorney, Miriam Shaw.
She knew enough about our businesses to distinguish criminal exposure from family mythology.
Second:
Dr. Park.
Third:
A private medical investigator.
Fourth:
One federal contact I had spent ten years pretending I did not trust.
Not because I suddenly became a law-abiding citizen.
Because Daniel’s captivity crossed a line even men like me understand.
A person is not property.
Especially not my brother.
Miriam reviewed Claire’s copied records.
Then looked at me.
“If these are authentic, you have more than a family problem.”
“I know.”
“Kidnapping. Fraud. False medical documentation. Potential controlled-substance violations.”
“I know.”
“Do not solve this with soldiers.”
“I know.”
She stared.
“Jonathan.”
“I said I know.”
“You say that before ignoring me.”
Claire looked amused.
Bad sign.
Miriam continued.
“If you raid a facility, Vincent will paint Daniel as an unstable patient abducted by criminal relatives.”
That landed.
“So?”
“We make Daniel legally visible.”
How?
Identity.
DNA.
Medical review.
Court orders.
External authorities.
Boring.
Powerful.
Miriam smiled faintly.
“You've spent twenty years believing fear is faster than paperwork.”
“It is.”
“Paperwork lasts longer.”
I hated her too.
Good lawyers.
Always ruining satisfying ideas.
We traced North Vale Rehabilitation Annex through shell companies.
Not easy.
Eventually, property records led to a converted estate outside Stamford.
Owned by a healthcare nonprofit.
Funded by North Vale.
Security contracts connected to a company Vincent quietly controlled.
There.
We had him.
But not enough.
Then Claire’s chip revealed another file.
A nine-year-old admission photograph.
Daniel.
I knew him instantly.
Thinner.
Bruised.
Eyes unfocused.
But him.
Under:
DAVID MILLER
Date:
Six days after Daniel was officially declared missing.
My hands shook.
Claire touched nothing.
Good.
Then the transfer authorization.
Signed:
V. Reed
Vincent.
My uncle.
The man who stood beside me at Daniel’s memorial.
The man who told me:
“Let the dead rest.”
May you like
I finally understood why.
