Chapter 12 - THE APOLOGY MONEY COULDN'T BUY

Adam arrived at Clara's apartment on a rainy Thursday evening.
He stood outside holding an umbrella.
Clara opened the door.
When she saw him, her expression changed.
"Mr. Hamilton."
Adam swallowed.
"Clara."
She waited.
He looked down.
"I came to apologize."
Clara said nothing.
Adam continued.
"I should have listened to you."
She looked away.
"I begged you."
"I know."
"I worked for your family for nine years."
"I know."
"I loved your son."
Adam's eyes filled.
"I know."
Clara's voice trembled.
"And you let your mother call me a thief."
Adam nodded.
"Yes."
The silence stretched.
Then he said:
"I was wrong."
Clara looked at him.
For the first time, he didn't try to explain.
Didn't blame his mother.
Didn't talk about pressure.
He simply accepted responsibility.
Adam reached into his coat.
He handed her an envelope.
Inside was a written apology and an offer to compensate her for lost wages, legal expenses, and reputational harm.
Clara looked at the papers.
Then at him.
"Do you think money fixes this?"
Adam shook his head.
"No."
"Then why are you offering it?"
"Because I caused real damage. And I have a responsibility to repair what I can."
Clara looked down.
Her hands trembled.
She needed money.
Desperately.
But she needed something else more.
"Publicly," she said.
Adam frowned.
"What?"
"You accused me publicly. You let your family destroy my name."
He nodded slowly.
Clara held his gaze.
"Then clear it publicly."
May you like
Adam answered without hesitation.
"I will."
