Chapter 1 - THE CASE BENEATH THE STAIRWELL

It ends with five-year-old Toby discovering two premature newborn boys inside an expensive leather travel case beneath an abandoned Manhattan subway entrance.
Beside the smaller baby lies a platinum signet ring bearing the crest of one of New York’s most powerful families.
The Vale crest.
Toby recognizes it because the same silver falcon appears on hospitals, skyscrapers, research centers, charity advertisements, and the enormous glass headquarters of Vale Therapeutics.
Beneath the crest are three initials:
M.V.C.
And less than an hour later, those initials will bring Alden Vale—the sixty-one-year-old patriarch of the pharmaceutical dynasty—to a pediatric emergency department, where he will learn that the daughter he believed had abandoned the family months earlier has just given birth to two sons.
