Chapter 9 - ELENA ASKED ME A DIFFERENT QUESTION

Three years after the rainstorm, Elena turned ten.

She wanted her birthday at Café Nate.

Not a ballroom.

Not my house.

Café Nate.

Rosa made cake.

Enzo decorated badly.

Detective Morales arrived because Elena invited her.

“Am I supposed to be socializing with organized crime?”

Morales asked.

I looked around.

“Former organized crime.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t push it.”

The old organization no longer existed in recognizable form.

Legitimate Moretti Logistics remained.

Construction under independent management.

Restaurants.

Warehouses.

Nothing requiring threats.

Some former associates created their own criminal groups.

I had no control over that.

A few blamed me for abandoning them.

Good.

Enzo ran licensed security.

Complained taxes were worse than gunfights.

I told him to file quarterly.

Claire’s restitution program distributed more than $11 million over three years through recovered assets and my contributions.

Still not enough.

Never enough.

But real.

She also founded a worker-safety initiative named for Patrick.

Patrick O’Shea Safety Fund.

No Moretti name.

Correct.

Elena kept photographs of her father.

Talked about him freely.

I never tried to occupy that space.

Then one day she asked:

“Can I show you something?”

She was ten now.

Serious.

We sat behind Café Nate.

She opened her backpack.

Inside:

The faded pink coat.

Too small now.

Safety pin still attached.

Claire had kept it.

Elena found the old seam where the red envelope had been hidden.

“You remember?”

“Yes.”

“I thought I gave Bruno to you.”

“You tried.”

“I was dumb.”

“No.”

“I thought people only help if you give them something.”

I looked at her.

“That wasn’t dumb.”

“Mom says I learned it because we were poor.”

“Maybe.”

She shook her head.

“Mom says poor isn’t the same as owing everybody.”

Claire was good.

Elena continued:

“Why did you really help?”

The question from Chapter 2 again.

Back then:

Because your mother asked.

Now I had a better answer.

“Because you asked.”

She frowned.

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t know me.”

“No.”

“You didn’t know Mommy.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

I thought.

“Because someone should have.”

She went quiet.

Then:

“Is that why you changed everything?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because helping you once while keeping a system that created people like Vittorio would have been easier than actually changing.”

Elena stared.

“You talk weird.”

Fair.

I simplified.

“Saving you made me feel good.”

She nodded.

“Changing cost me things.”

“Oh.”

“That’s how I knew changing mattered.”

She considered this.

Then smiled.

“You should put that on a mug.”

“No.”

She shoved the pink coat back into her bag.

Then:

“Can I ask a weird question?”

“Apparently.”

“If Mommy marries you…”

My chest stopped.

“…can Bruno be ring bearer?”

I stared.

“Your mother is marrying me?”

Elena’s face changed.

Oops.

She covered her mouth.

I stood.

“Elena.”

“I’m not supposed to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

“Nothing.”

“Did your mother say something?”

“No.”

Terrible liar.

Claire arrived fifteen minutes later.

I was still suspicious.

She looked at Elena.

Elena looked at the ceiling.

Claire sighed.

“What did you tell him?”

“Nothing.”

I pointed.

“She asked whether Bruno could be ring bearer.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Then started laughing.

I stared.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Well.”

“Well?”

“I was going to tell you tonight.”

My heart pounded.

“Tell me what?”

“That I found a ring.”

I went completely still.

Claire smiled.

“Patrick’s mother gave it to me.”

She took my hand.

“I don’t want you to propose because you think you rescued us.”

“I don’t.”

“I don’t want to marry into the Moretti name because it means safety.”

“It doesn’t.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want to be responsible for proving you changed.”

“You aren’t.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then:

“But if you asked because you want to build an ordinary life with me…”

I stared.

Elena whispered:

“Ask.”

“Please stop helping.”

“Ask!”

Claire laughed.

So I did.

No restaurant.

No violin.

No diamond in champagne.

Behind Café Nate.

A ten-year-old watching.

A dog chewing cardboard nearby.

“Claire O’Shea, would you marry me?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

Elena screamed.

Bruno barked.

Enzo came running with his hand under his jacket.

Morales yelled:

“Relax!”

Perfect.

We married six months later.

Small ceremony.

Claire kept O’Shea professionally.

Elena kept O’Shea.

I remained Moretti.

Nobody cared.

Bruno carried the rings in a pouch.

Almost lost them chasing a pigeon.

Elena did not call me Dad.

Not immediately.

She called me Luca at home.

Mr. Scary when annoyed.

That was enough.

Then one night a year later, I passed her bedroom.

She was on the phone with a friend.

“My dad died when I was little.”

Pause.

“My stepdad is Luca.”

I stopped in the hallway.

Did not move.

Then:

“He’s weird but okay.”

May you like

Best review I ever received.
